Cyle Stanley wins faster loans nationally
After a five-year run without a win on the PGA Tour, Kyle Stanley finished with a play-off win over Charles Howell III at the Quicken Loans National. Started the game four rounds back the previous morning, but matched a 66 at TPC Potomac to get seven under and lead the competition into additional pockets where Stanley won with a single save on the first additional pocket.
Rickie Fowler raised a birdie-filled 65 to a third place finish with Martin Laird from Scotland, with David Ling Merth, one of eight men, taking another shot back to four over night. On his first five-hole climb, Langmerth fell two bogies when Daniel Summerhays made short progress, but then the final double-bogey.
With Curtis Luck at the top of the standings after three birdie's on a four-hole course, Martin Laird took a front-nine 32 and Sung Kang a shot on the 7th and 9th game day to achieve a foursome. When Howell won a step-in on the tenth day and emptied a 30-foot-agle on the fourth day to reach seven under the leadership, four birdies in a six-hole course from the fifth to the fifth raised Stanley to part of the leadership.
And Stanley made a two-putt birdy on the same drivable par-four to move next to Howell, who was a centimeter away from holding a 20-foot birdy for last chance. The win gave Stanley one of four qualifying places for The Open that were available to those in the top 12 and not already excluded, with Howell III, Laird and Kang also ensuring a place for Royal Birkdale.
